Essential Oils Extraction from your Home Garden-Karatfarms

Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. The oils capture the plant’s scent and flavor, or “essence.”

Essential oils are obtained through distillation or mechanical methods, such as cold pressing.

The way the oils are made is important, as essential oils obtained through chemical processes are not considered true essential oils.

In this article, we will see how to extract essential oil from rose-scented geranium.

What you will need;

1. A gas or induction stove.

2. Reactor. A large container, to hold leaves and water.

3. A transparent or opaque lid.

4. Lots of ice cubes ( at least 50 - 60 cubes).

5. Collection vessel. A small microwave-proof plastic container, to collect your essential oil.

6. Last but not least fresh geranium leaves.

Process;

• Drop the leaves in the container and fill the water up to the level of the leaves.

• Place the collection vessel in the center of the reactor.

• Placed the lid, inverted on the reactor. Ensure there is no gap present between the lid and the reactor.

• Next up, fire up the stove on low flame. We don't want it to burn the leaves, we will gently warm them up.

• Place ice cubes on the inverted lid, in the center. This will condense the vapor touching the lid.

• Leave the stove on for at least an hour.

• You will notice that ice cubes will melt within 10-15 min. Keep replacing the ice cubes as soon as they melt out.

• After an hour, check the collection for how much you have been able to collect.

• You can choose to leave it for another 30min to an hour, to collect a little more.

• The liquid in the collection vessel is not pure oil, it is mixed with water from the reactor.

You can use this process to collect the oils of many other plants and flowers. Such as rose, jasmine, lavender, rosemary, etc.

I use this oil in the following ways:

1. A few drops in the washing machine while washing clothes.

2. A few drops along with floor cleaning liquid.

3. A few drops in the diffuser.
